How to setup iPad Parental Control

I have a 7 years old at home and we share an iPad together. I do want him to enjoy the power of Google search, but at the same time I'm worried about many inappropriate content on the Internet. I feel that many parents are in the same boat, so I'm sharing my experience in this blog.

First of all, the basics. I assume you have already set up a passcode and an Apple ID password. Needless to say, you child must NOT know these passwords(!) or be able to guess these passwords easily. Beyond the basics, I use a combination of Guided Access and Mobicip safe browser to control access to certain apps and filter age inappropriate content.

Guided Access

Guided Access allows you to lock your device to a single app. You can enable Guided Access from : Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access

With Guided Access enabled, if I let my son play Minecraft for half an hour, I will unlock the iPad, start Minecraft app, then “triple-click” the Home button to enable the Guided Access mode. Once the Guided Access mode is enabled, you may set a time limit, click start and pass the iPad to your child. You child can use that single app within the time limit but won't have access to anything else on the iPad. You can find more instruction here.

Mobicip safe browser

Guide Access helps you to lock your child’s access to a single app, but it doesn't filter content. If I give my son access to Safari browser, everything on the Internet is available to him. With Mobicip browser, you may choose one of the four content filtering levels and the browser blocks the sites/contents based on a website blacklist plus some dynamic content analysis. Once you download the Mobicip from App Store, you would need to create an account and login to mobicip.com to create a filter profile.

Now I just need to use Guided Access to lock iPad to Mobicip browser before I pass it to my child. If you want more sophisticated filtering, e.g. customize the websites you wish to block, you would need to pay for the Mobicip premium version which is $39.99/year at the time of writing.
